Facts about Ontario Honey courtesy of the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association
Ontario honey is produced by Ontario beekeepers. Located across the province, they work hard to give each honey its specific strength.
Honey is produced when the sweet honeydew (from trees) or nectar (from flowers) is gathered by the bees, stored and matured in the hive, and processed carefully by the beekeeper. This process gives each honey its specific flavours, strength or mildness, colour and consistency.
In Ontario you will discover a range of wonderful honeys. Beekeepers offer wildflower, blueberry, lavender, basswood, goldenrod, clover and summer blossom. The names beekeepers put on the labels will be as unique as the flavours in the jar. Ontario’s distinctive tasting honey is derived from floral sources such as clover, alfalfa, buckwheat, goldenrod, basswood and summer flowers.
Ontario honey has a healthy sugar profile, says Dr. Heather Keller, a nutritional consultant. “Not only is Ontario honey a good source of energy before exercise,” reports Keller, “but it’s high in sugars such as fructose that make it an ideal choice for children and those with impaired glucose intolerance such as type 1 diabetes. Additionally, research indicates that the flavonoids and phenols in honey generally have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health benefit that can prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and arthritis.”
